Our Story
Rio Combat is a renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Dojo located in Alameda, California. Led by Diogo Gomes, a 4th degree black belt.
Diogo got into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, dealing with challenges both in the streets and on the mats. He started doing martial arts at 8, trying out Judo, Taekwondo, and Capoeira before stumbling upon Jiu-jitsu at 15. With Master Luiz Paulo's guidance in Niteroi, Brazil, Diogo competed a lot during his colored belt days. He became a State champion and qualified for Nationals, Team Nationals, and the first-ever World Championships in 1996. These experiences shaped his mission to share what he's learned, wanting to boost people's confidence in their skills. For him, it's not just a hobby; it's a lifestyle he's passionate about.
As a brown belt and a law student in Brazil, Diogo moved to the US to learn English and get a degree at CCSF for his career in International Business. While teaching and training BJJ in the Bay Area, he was promoted to black belt in 2008 by his friends Fabio Prado and Master Luiz Paulo. That's when Diogo decided to open the Rio Combat Team and dedicate himself to spreading his knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu.
"Since teaching since 2008, I've seen people change their lives through Jiu-Jitsu. It's not about the money; it's about having a purpose. I feel satisfied when I see a positive impact. If money comes, that's cool, but my main focus has always been on the journey and the people whose lives got better," Diogo says.
Diogo is the head instructor for all classes and curriculum at RCT and is often teaching students directly.
